Taking the Dive! An Intro to Extreme Wheelchair Sports

Image Things have definitely changed over the years. Technology has run rampant in the disabled sports arena from titanium and magnesium-framed wheelchairs build custom for the individual user to prosthetic limbs with microchips in them to learn a person’s movements. In the last couple years we have had people breaking all the barriers that were set before us by all sorts of people disabled and able-bodied alike. Yes, we put barriers on ourselves! So many times I hear people say, “I can’t do that.” Well, yes, actually you can if you really want to. I mean, come on! We have had a 14 year old do the first ever back flip in a wheelchair to a paraplegic racing his dirt bike in the Baja 500. We have infiltrated the CORR Truck Series, Nascar, and are knocking on the door of so many more events.

There are people just like them all over the world doing the same. I have had a lot of my own experience in trying new sports and activities over my 14 years, from basketball, tennis, and road racing to racing stock cars and rock climbing. I have learned one thing from all of it… if you want to do something, do it. You are going to have to work very hard at some things and you may have to search out the right equipment, but desire is the only barrier I have met yet.

There is adaptive equipment out there for practically everything you could imagine and what isn’t out there at the present is on its way. People are getting injured everyday and so many of them are not just lying down on the things they love to do. Either they have the ability to make the equipment themselves or they have a friend/family member that can. The equipment of the past is advancing leaps and bounds from where it was even 5 years ago. You no longer have to trek around in your grandfather’s chrome folding frame chair. Now you can roll in style and ease in a Titanium or Magnesium, custom built piece of modern machinery.

The internet itself has become one of the most valuable resources to find anything you could possibly want. All you have to look for it. From sports organizations like the NWBA (National Wheelchair Basketball Association) to gear companies like Kelty Outdoors, you can find just what you need to get out there.

In your endless surfing all over the net, you might want to stop by and check out Lasher Sport, Colours Wheelchair, Extremity Games, and AAS.com. These are just a few more of the companies and events out there building and doing killer stuff to get all of us out there doing anything we dream of.

I hope everyone who reads this gets the fire lit inside them to go and do anything they ever dreamed of. Keep your eyes pealed for more detailed information as I get it.
