In September 2011, Backbones, the Chicago based peer support group brought together people with and without spinal cord injuries (SCI) to the MercyCorps Headquarters Building. The event was rolling with fun with a wide range of attendees, from models in wheelchairs to special guests the Rose City Rollers derby girls.
It was a gathering of healthcare professionals, people with spinal injuries and the general public enjoying good company and educating the community about the awesome things people with SCI are doing around the nation. With support from local businesses and the community, the event showcased Portland and all its colors.
From its birthplace in Chicago, BACKBONES is expanding nationwide- first stop, the Northwest. BACKBONES is a nonproft organization that provides support for people with spinal cord injury (SCI) and their families nationwide. Through one-on-one telephone, in-person or web-based connections, BACKBONES encourages sharing experiences and motivates people to live life to the fullest! BACKBONES events create an alternative to the traditional “support group” where people can ask questions, learn from each other informally and make lasting friendships.
Reveca Torres, founder of BACKBONES, injured her spine in a car accident at age 13. Years later when she met and became friends with others with SCI she understood the impact of these relationships in her life. She wished she had someone to relate to from the very beginning. BACKBONES was started to create such opportunities for others.
